1922-07-27 Benny Leonard nd-w pts 12 Lew Tendler, Boyle’s Thirty Acres, Jersey City, New Jersey, USA - WORLD. Referee: Harry Ertle. Billed as a title fight, Tendler (134¼) let the opportunity of becoming champion slip from his grasp when on the verge of victory he let Leonard (135) talk him out of it. For seven rounds, Leonard found Tendler’s southpaw style difficult to fathom and, in the eighth, with the champion, having been cut on the forehead in the first, in trouble and holding on for dear life after being hit with some big punches, Tendler eased off and Leonard got back into his routine to be awarded the press decision. Obviously having difficulty in making 135lbs anymore, Leonard continued to take part in contests, some billed as title fights, where he came in over the weight while allowing the opposition to come in below 135lbs. Two such fights came against Ever Hammer (nd-w pts 10 on 5 August 1922 at Floyd Fitzsimmons’ Arena, Michigan City, Michigan) and Alex Hart (nd-w pts 8 on 9 July 1923 at the Phillies Ballpark, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).
