Line 1: Line 1:
1923-02-13 Pinky Mitchell nd-w pts 10 Johnny Tillman, The Auditorium, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - WISCONSIN. Referee: George Duffy. In what was a sensational fight, full of furious action, Mitchell (140) was down in the second from an overarm right and had to fight for his life to retain the title, his body attacks taking the steam out of Tillman (139) in the latter rounds. On occasion neither man heard the bell and the sixth session saw both men on the floor after landing simultaneously. Despite all that had gone before, the tenth turned into the most exciting round, as Mitchell, on the verge of landing a kayo, was dropped by a terrific left to the jaw before surprising everybody, including Tillman, when getting to his feet immediately to retain his honours.
