1923-10-04 Mike McTigue drew 10 Young Stribling, The Auditorium, Columbus, Georgia, USA - NY/NBA/GB. Referee: Harry Ertle. Following the fight, in which Stribling (165lbs) had appeared to win eight of the ten rounds and had battered and knocked McTigue (162lbs) down in the tenth round, it was claimed that the latter was forced at gunpoint to fight on even though he had suffered a broken hand. Another bone of contention came when the imported referee first called a draw, before changing it to a win for Stribling when intimidated by the crowd, which included hooded Ku Klux Klansmen. Afterwards, when safely back home, he refuted his second decision and the fight remains on record as a draw.
Some two months later, on 10 December at Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, Gene Tunney retained his American title when outpointing Harry Greb over 15 rounds and although fighting regularly among the heavyweights he looked forward to a crack against McTigue.
