1925-07-06 Mike Ballerino w pts 15 Pepper Martin, Queensboro Stadium, Queens, NYC, New York, USA - NY/NBA/PENN. Referee: Johnny McAvoy. Despite being put down early on and taking a terrific beating in the first eight rounds, Martin (129¾) clawed his way back over the remainder of the contest to set Ballerino (129¼) plenty of problems and make it a close run thing in the eyes of the fans. There was plenty of blood and guts and Martin gave it everything and more, but at decision time all three cards were in the champion’s favour. Sadly, on 19 July Martin passed away in a New York hospital following the effects of his brave title challenge. It was reported in the New York Times that the ten-round no-decision contest between Ballerino (127) and the 131lbs Billy Henry, contested at The Stadium, Bayonne, New Jersey on 14 August, involved the championship. However, made at 132lbs in order to protect Ballerino, both men had to get off the floor before the latter came home strongly to take the press decision. At the NBA Convention in October it was announced that the Association no longer recognised 130lbs as a championship weight.
