1925-12-02 Tod Morgan w rtd 10 (10) Mike Ballerino, Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA - CALIFORNIA/NY/PENN. Referee: Benny Whitman. Challenging for the title, Morgan (128) caused a first-rate surprise when handling Ballerino (129¾) with some ease, his additional reach and punching ability enabling him to dictate much of the action on the back foot and to hit the target on a regular basis. In the tenth and final round, Ballerino was at the end of his tether, having been knocked down twice in quick succession, and barely able to stand his seconds threw the towel in to save him from taking further punishment.
Although some newspapers reported Morgan’s ten-round no-decision press win over Don Davis at The Arena, East Chicago, Indiana, on 26 February 1926 as being a fight where he could possibly lose his title that statement can be discounted. It is almost certain that the contest was made at 132lbs, with the Bakersfield Californian reporting that Davis scaled 131½ lbs to Morgan’s 130.
On 29 March 1926 at the Rayen-Wood Auditorium, Youngstown, Ohio, Morgan outpointed Eddie Brady over 12 rounds in a contest which was initially advertised as being for the championship. However, further scrutiny of the fight report in the Youngstown Indicator confirms that the contest was contracted at 133lbs, thus eliminating it from having any title involvement.
