1927-03-14 Mushy Callahan w co 2 (12) Andy DiVodi, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - CALIFORNIA. Referee: Jim Crowley. Despite Tex Rickard promising the winner a $2,000 diamond studded belt and promoting the fight in New York, the NYSAC continued to state that they did not recognise any champions within the 140lbs weight class. Regardless of the NYSAC position, DiVodi (139½), who was unbeaten in 38 bouts, was more than happy to get a crack at Callahan (138½) on home turf.
Although forcing the action from the opening bell, DiVodi continually walked into punches and was punished when a long left floored him in the first round. Even then he appeared to be confident of winning until a solid left hook to the body in the second, followed by a right to the jaw, saw him fall into a clinch. The damage done was there for all to see and as Callahan stepped back, DiVodi slumped to the floor to be counted out on the 2.13 mark.
