1927-05-31 Mushy Callahan w pts 10 Spug Myers, Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois, USA - ILLINOIS/CALIFORNIA. Referee: Jim Gardner. Successfully defending his title by a unanimous decision, Callahan (139½) was the master at long range, sending in solid lefts to the body and rights to the jaw in every round, while Myers (137½), badly cut over the left eye in the third, had the better of it when at close quarters. The challenger had a good fifth round, shared the next three, and even though tearing in for the last two sessions with long left and right swings he was unable to turn it his way.
Known as ‘The Jewel of the Ghetto’, Ruby Goldstein topped Tex Rickard’s ratings at the end of 1927 despite having suffered bad defeats at the hands of Ace Hudkins, Billy Alger and Sid Terris. Rickard obviously thought highly of him but he never did get a crack at the title, and following a second-round kayo defeat inflicted on him by a rampant Jimmy McLarnin in December 1929 he faded from the scene. He later became one of America’s leading referees.
