1928-04-09 [[Izzy Schwartz]] w pts 15 [[Routier Parra]], St Nicholas Arena, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - NY. Referee: Patsy Haley. Although Schwartz (111) took every round to win the unanimous decision, the aggressive Parra (108), cut over the left eye in the second, was continuously trying to get into the fight. Having little success, with the champion’s punches being far too rapid and accurate for him, Parra was hammered without respite but never went down and lasted to the final bell.

On 9 May at the Shrine Auditorium, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Schwartz gained a ten-round press victory over [[Happy Atherton]]. Although there was no mention of weights and it was outside the jurisdiction of the NYSAC, the local paper reported that while Atherton was not expected to wrest the title from Schwartz a good showing would do much to gain him a bout where the crown would be very much at stake. Despite the newspaper expectancy, this one was almost certainly an over-the-weight contest.
