1929-03-25 Jackie Fields w pts 10 Young Jack Thompson, The Coliseum, Chicago, Illinois, USA - NBA. Referee: Ed Purdy. Billed for the vacant NBA title, Fields (145¾) started well, almost dropping Thompson (145) on a couple of occasions in the opening two rounds when he had him groggy from a terrific battering to head and body. Thereafter, Thompson was up against it, but having won the seventh when launching a desperate rally he was going well until panic broke out in the audience in the eighth. The problem started when two paying customers drew weapons on each other, and although both Fields and Thompson continued fighting while this was going on the contest was halted when some of the fans found their way into the ring after the crowd had stampeded. However, once calm and order was resumed the fight started again some 15 minutes later. With a minute of round eight still left it was immediately noticeable that Thompson had been affected more than Fields by the enforced interlude. While Thompson began to find his feet towards the end of the tenth, after the final bell rang there was no surprise when the referee awarded Fields the decision. Having proved to be the better man on the night, Fields was thought to have won eight of the ten rounds contested with his unswerving offensive being too much for Thompson to handle.
