1929-12-20 Benny Bass w co 2 (15) Tod Morgan, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - NY/NBA/PENN/CALIF. Referee: Jim Crowley. After giving a great exhibition of box-fighting in the opening round and having Bass (127) on the verge of a kayo, there was a complete reversal of Morgan’s fortunes in the second session as the challenger came out refreshed and a long left hook followed by a terrific right to the jaw put Morgan (128) down for nine. On rising, Morgan was smashed down again to be counted out on the 0.51 mark and a few hours later both fighters' purses were suspended while the New York State Athletic Commission conducted an investigation into a possible betting coup. However, with no conclusive evidence forthcoming, both men were eventually cleared of any misconduct. On 31 December, the NYSAC decided not to acknowledge ‘junior’ titles in future on the grounds that they were riddled with ‘unsatisfactory’ title bouts. A few days later, on 4 January 1930, Edward Foster, the Chairman of the NBA Championship Committee, recommended that the NBA should do likewise, but despite giving lukewarm support to the weight class the Association took no general action to abandon it until 20 September 1932.
