1930-03-21 Midget Wolgast w pts 15 Black Bill, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - NY. Referee: Jack Dorman. Giving a brilliant display of left-hand boxing, Wolgast (110), who had already built up a reputation for speed and nimble footwork, waltzed to victory over Bill (109½) to win the NYSAC version of the title. The unanimous decision in his favour merely emphasised the gulf in ability between the pair. Prior to the fight only three men had posted victories over Wolgast in 74 contests, despite many of them being no-decision affairs.
Five days later, concurring with the NYSAC ruling, Wolgast was acclaimed as world champion by the Pennsylvanian Boxing Commission, an authority who had failed to recognise any fighter as champion following the demise of Pancho Villa.
