1930-06-11 Jack Kid Berg w pts 10 Herman Perlick, Queensboro Stadium, Queens, NYC, New York, USA - NBA. Referee: Johnny McAvoy. Although not supported as a title bout by the New York authority, as far as Berg was concerned he was the NBA champion and had a right to defend the title where he wanted as long as he adhered to the every-six-month defence ruling against worthy opposition.
Made at 140lbs, this was another humdinger for Berg (138¼) as he came under more pressure than he had been forced to endure during his sojourn in the USA when faced by Perlick (138½), the twin brother of Henry, who was also a more than useful fighter. Perlick started strongly, going punch for punch to gain a good lead in the early rounds before Berg began to make up lost ground in the middle sessions. Belabouring Perlick with an assortment of body blows Berg got stronger as the fight progressed, being good value for his points win.
Another contest that saw both Berg (135) and his opponent weighing in below 140lbs came at the Polo Grounds, Manhattan, NYC against Kid Chocolate (124) on 7 August. However, with both men inside the lightweight limit this was considered to be an eliminator for the 135lbs title. Berg won on points over ten rounds.
