1931-01-05 Benny Bass w pts 10 Lew Massey, The Arena, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA – PENN/NBA. Referee: Leo Houck. Although taking place on non-NBA territory, the Pennsylvanian Boxing Commission were happy to support this one as a title fight, but it barely lived up to expectation after the fourth round when it was apparent that Massey (128), despite having countered well, was being outclassed. Surprisingly though, Bass (127½) abandoned any thoughts of a kayo win and took no chances as he picked his punches carefully, although occasionally shaking the challenger up. There was a big rally in the tenth from Massey, but Bass saw the storm out to collect the unanimous decision.
