1931-01-23 Jack Kid Berg w pts 10 Goldie Hess, The Stadium, Chicago, Illinois, USA - NBA. Referee: Tommy Thomas. In one of the best contests ever seen at the venue, Berg (138¼), shooting in left hands at rapier-like speed, travelled 30 minutes without a pause to make a successful defence of his title by a unanimous decision. Hess (137¾), unable to fight at distance and swamped with blows from every conceivable angle, had his first success in the eighth, but having called upon all of his reserves he was almost done for as Berg continued to throw a terrific amount of leather thereafter.  Somehow he survived the remaining six minutes to make it to the final bell, but he only just got there.
