1931-01-30 Jack Kid Berg w pts 10 Herman Perlick, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - NBA. Referee: Johnny McAvoy. At their convention in September 1930, the NBA had ruled that if any champion defended titles in New York, California, Massachusetts or Pennsylvania after 1 January 1931 they would be barred from fighting in member States, but with Rhode Island and seven other States railing against the judgement it never came into being. Berg (138½) was the first man to test the water when he met Perlick (139) in a New York return and after making a good start he was rocked by lefts and rights to the head in the second before regaining control. From the third round Perlick went on the back foot and for the rest of the fight he held on tight, ran, or flashed his right hand weakly in a vain attempt to hold Berg off. The champion’s burning pace and furious attacks were just too much for the American, who went down unanimously by nine rounds to one.
