1931-04-24 Tony Canzoneri w co 3 (10) Jack Kid Berg, The Stadium, Chicago, Illinois, USA - WORLD. Referee: Phil Collins. After a fairly even couple of rounds as both men warmed to the task, Berg (134¼) decided to give it a go in the third, landing to head and body and driving Canzoneri (132) before him until he walked into a countering right cross. Falling flat on his face, the challenger made every effort to rise, but was counted out on the 2.23 mark.
Following the fight and bearing in mind that Berg had been forced to make the lightweight limit of 135lbs under the terms of the contract, in their wisdom the Chicago Boxing Commission and the NBA contentiously decided that Canzoneri had also won the Englishman’s 140lbs title. Canzoneri would continue to take part in junior welterweight championship fights throughout his first lightweight title reign.
In a battle between the two top-rated men in the division, and sanctioned as an eliminator by the NYSAC to find a suitable opponent for Canzoneri, Billy Petrolle knocked out Juste Suarez in the ninth round of ten at Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York on 25 June 1931.
