1931-06-17 Pete Sanstol w pts 15 Art Giroux, The Forum, Montreal, Canada - MONTREAL. Referee: Ernest Boucher. As the reigning Canadian champion, Giroux (117¾) made a fast start, but by round five he had begun to run out of ideas. It seemed only a matter of time before he would be despatched by Sanstol (117½), especially when he was down in the eighth from a right to the jaw. However, bravely hanging in, the challenger somehow kept going to lose a landslide unanimous points decision. Giroux had been floored five times in the last round and ten times in all in what was the first 15-round contest held in Canada to a decision.
Following this, Sanstol was next matched to defend the Montreal version of the title against Eugene Huat, the French champion. This was an effort by the promoter and the Montreal Boxing Commission to force Panama Al Brown, the man the majority of the world recognised as world champion, into making a title defence against the winner.
