1931-06-25 Tony Canzoneri w pts 10 Herman Perlick, White City Stadium, New Haven, Connecticut, USA - NBA. Referee: Billy Conway. Scorecard 9-1. Both men started at a fast clip, but it was the champion, displaying lightning right hands from all angles to offset the Perlick (140) left jab, who went clear round after round. In the penultimate session, Canzoneri (134), who had been stung by a right hander to the chin, ripped into Perlick who met him punch for punch, which lasted until the final bell and the referee’s decision. It had been an exciting contest that was full of heavy slugging, with Canzoneri, protected from losing his lightweight crown after Perlick was contracted to come in above 135lbs.
