1931-10-29 Tony Canzoneri w pts 10 Philly Griffin, The Armory, Newark, New Jersey, USA - NBA. Referee: John Healy. Canzoneri (132) was never in danger of losing his title to Griffin (138¾), holding his rival off with long lefts to the body and doing very much as he pleased as he easily evaded the right-hand counters coming his way. Only in the last three rounds did he open up with savage attacks that saw Griffin holding on at every opportunity and the referee’s decision was a formality.

Although Canzoneri (132) outpointed Kid Chocolate (127½) over 15 rounds of a billed lightweight championship fight at Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York on 20 November, had he lost it is possible that he may well have forfeited the junior title in the eyes of the NBA.
