1932-11-04 Tony Canzoneri w pts 15 Billy Petrolle, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WORLD. Referee: Ed Gunboat Smith. Although Petrolle (134½) found it difficult to make the weight for Canzoneri (132) that should not detract from the latter’s performance, which was superb. For the first 11 rounds the challenger was in with a chance, but the last five sessions all belonged to Canzoneri, who outboxed and outslugged the slugger to well earn the unanimous verdict. Trading punches with the ever-dangerous Petrolle showed the champion’s fearlessness and the fight should be recognised as one of his best.

Canzoneri’s next challenger would be Barney Ross, who had lost just two of 48 contests and was seen as a real comer.
