1933-03-01 Bob Godwin w pts 10 Joe Knight, Dixie Arena, West Palm Beach, Florida, USA - NBA. Referee: Phil O’Connell. Billed for the championship of the Southern States as well as involving the NBA crown, the Palm Beach Post reported that the southpaw Knight (173) took the first round, with the second and third even, before knocking Godwin (164) down in the fourth and cutting his right eye in a free-swinging session. Godwin, weaving in with rights and lefts, began to rally in the fifth through to the tenth, while Knight, despite being hurt on occasion, continued to throw terrific left hooks. The final round saw both men going toe to toe, but Godwin, with both eyes nearly closed, did just enough to deserve the referee’s decision. Surprisingly, bearing in mind what a tough fight it had been and the amount of damage done to his eyes, Godwin would meet Maxie Rosenbloom little more than three weeks later.
