1934-07-13 Freddie Miller w co 8 (10) Gene Espinosa, Civic Auditorium, Watsonville, California, USA - NBA. Referee: Jimmy Irvine. According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel this was a 126lbs title defence for Miller despite the weights not being announced, and was concluded in the eighth round. It had been an interesting fight, the flashy Espinosa making life difficult for Miller regardless of taking a count of ‘nine’ in the opening session. However, using his southpaw jab repeatedly to keep his rival off balance and biding his time the champion eventually caught up with Espinosa, a hard left to the pit of the stomach bringing about a count-out. The paper went on to say that the unfortunate Espinosa was unable to leave the ring for about five minutes. There were clearly differing views on the fight, the Montana Standard stating that Miller retained his title with ease, while another paper reported that Espinosa was knocked out by a right to the body that was followed by a solid left to the jaw.
