1935-05-10 Tony Canzoneri w pts 15 Lou Ambers, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WORLD. Referee: Arthur Donovan. Contested to decide the title that was left vacant when Barney Ross gave it up rather than struggling to make the weight, Canzoneri (133) was returned as champion on all three scorecards, having put up another great display of guts and ability to turn back the younger man, who had been an outstanding favourite to win. Floored twice in the third round and again in the 15th, Ambers (133¾) received a boxing lesson from the two-fisted Canzoneri, who realised it was his last chance of the big time and made the best of it.
With Holman Williams, the leading coloured fighter at the time, apparently being frozen out he beat Baby Tiger Flowers (w co 8 at Comiskey Park, Chicago, Illinois) on 2 July 1935 in a fight advertised and billed as involving the coloured lightweight championship. The billing, however, failed to get Williams a crack at the world title and he was soon plying his wares among the welters.
