1935-09-07 Sixto Escobar w pts 12 Pete Sanstol, The Forum, Montreal, Canada - MONTREAL. Referee: Mickey McGowan. Boxing excellently in the early part of the contest, Sanstol (117¾) scored well with the left hand, but having been cut under the left eye in the sixth and almost dropped in the seventh it was do-or-die from then on. Knowing that the fight was now his the hard-hitting Escobar (118) concentrated on the body, refraining from opening up more wounds on the battered ‘Blond Bullet’, to win a unanimous points decision.

The Montreal Gazette reported that, after his victory, Escobar was recognised by the NBA as the leading contender for the title that had been vacated when the Commission decided not to accept Baltasar Sangchilli following his victory over Panama Al Brown.
