1935-11-15 Sixto Escobar w pts 15 Lou Salica, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA – NY/NBA. Referee: Billy Cavanagh. Gaining revenge for his earlier defeat at the hands of Salica (117), Escobar (117¾) became the new American champion when he outboxed the Brooklynite round after round to win the unanimous decision, not allowing his rival the room to use his better boxing. The fight should have been over in the third session when Salica was knocked down and the referee mistimed the count, giving the champion 12 seconds to get to his feet after the timekeeper had actually counted Salica out.
Having taken time out in Puerto Rico, Escobar arrived back in New York in May 1936 to prepare for a championship fight against Baltazar Sangchilli. With the latter having been matched against Tony Marino, Escobar took in a warm-up contest on 15 July 1936 against Indian Quintana at the Queensboro Stadium, Queens, NYC. Following two shock defeats, Sangchilli losing to Marino and Escobar being beaten on points over ten rounds by Quintana, the Puerto Rican was matched to defend his title against Marino, who was now recognised by The Ring magazine as the champion.
