1935-12-16 Small Montana w pts 10 Tuffy Pierpont, The Auditorium, Oakland, California, USA - CALIFORNIA. Referee: Toby Irwin. Having been beaten inside the distance by Montana (109½) previously, Pierpont (111¾), a hard puncher himself, refused to lead in fear of a counter attack and the champion took round after round until being slightly pegged back in the last two sessions. To add to his woes, Pierpont was cut over the left eye in round six, an injury which forced him to show even more restraint prior to Montana being awarded the referee’s decision. Montana was eventually recognised by the NBA as their champion in September 1936.
