1936-03-02 Freddie Miller w pts 15 Petey Sarron, Coral Gables Coliseum, Miami, Florida, USA - NBA. Referee: Leo Shea. Scorecard: 6-3. A veteran of over 11 years and 114 contests in the ring, the unorthodox Sarron (125) gave the champion some bad moments, throwing punches in from all angles, and due to the ‘No-Foul Rule’ applying in Florida the unfortunate Miller (125) was twice forced to take time out after being struck at least half a dozen times with low blows in the last third of the fight. However, having won ten rounds in decisive fashion, Miller gamely struggled through to the finish to receive the referee’s decision.

Twelve days later, Miller took on Spain’s Fillo Echevarria at the Cristal Arena, Havana, Cuba on 14 March, winning decisively on points over ten rounds after an excellent contest. Although Alabama’s Birmingham News reported that Echevarria weighed in at 126lbs to Miller’s 125¼ and intimated that the NBA title was on the line, in truth the match was made at 127lbs according to the Havana Post.
