1936-10-27 Henry Armstrong w pts 10 Mike Belloise, Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA - CALIFORNIA. Referee: Abe Roth. Although advertised as a Californian world title defence by Armstrong (125) it was not recognised as such by the NYSAC, who continued to support Belloise (125) as their world champion even though he failed to gain the referee’s decision, which went to the former on aggression. The fight itself was not too exciting, with both men content to fight at close quarters, and the result left something to be desired after Belloise straightened Armstrong up a couple of times with punches that had the latter wobbling about on lost legs.
Less than a year later, on 10 August 1937, Belloise, due to defend against Armstrong, was forced to abdicate the New York version of the title on suffering a serious illness. This was done on the premise that he would be given the opportunity of winning it back if and when he returned to the ring. Meanwhile, Armstrong was matched against Petey Sarron in a unification fight.
