1937-01-12 Gustave Roth drew 15 Jose Antonio Rodrigues, Fluminense Football Ground, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil - IBU. Referee: Rodrigo Jurado. In fight that was too close to find a winner according to the referee, Roth (165½) held on to his title claim via a drawn decision. Newspaper reports of the contest state that while Roth showed excellent defensive ability and worked well on the inside, his Portuguese opponent made him fight every inch of the way. There was no mention of any knockdowns. With the partisan crowd solidly behind Rodrigues (167½), every time Roth took command of the situation the Portuguese man would come right back at him. Despite Rodrigues finishing strongly, he was unable to find the punch to end matters and on winning just one of his next six contests he retired.
