1937-02-19 Freddie Steele w pts 15 Babe Risko, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - NY/NBA. Referee: Arthur Donovan. Scorecards: 11-4, 11-4, 11-4. Having already experienced the power of the champion over 25 rounds, Risko (158) decided that boxing on the back foot would be the best way to deal with Steele (157). With Steele unable to get himself going early on, missing badly at times, Risko was ahead after five rounds. He had taken advantage of the situation when smashing in right-hand swings to head and body as his rival over-reached and left himself open. It was not until the sixth that Steele was able to find himself, Risko dangerously close to being knocked out, but the latter undid all his good work when getting penalised for a low blow. From the seventh through to the 14th it was all Steele as he pushed Risko back, often having him on shaky legs, but in the 15th when making one last effort the latter started to crack in hard rights and lefts to the champion’s head in a vain attempt to land a kayo. Ultimately, it was far too little and too late to make any difference to the cards, the unanimous decision in favour of Steele being fully expected.
