1937-05-01 Gustave Roth w pts 15 John Andersson, Sports Palace, Antwerp, Belgium - IBU. Referee: Mr Desmerts. Billed for the IBU version of the world championship as well as being a European title defence for Roth, although no weights were reported on the day of the fight two days earlier Roth scaled 169¾lbs to Andersson’s 172. In what was a clash of styles, Andersson attacked from the first bell, shaking up the clever Roth in the third round before the latter was cut over the eyes in the fourth due to an accidental clash of heads. In the fourth and the fifth the Swede was warned for head butts. Although Andersson was always aggressive and many of the rounds were evenly contested, Roth, displaying excellent defensive skills, was scoring at will in the tenth and dominated the 13th and 14th prior to going toe-to-toe in the 15th. Following the contest, Andersson’s manager filed a complaint with the IBU, arguing that the fourth round had lasted five minutes, 45 seconds due to the referee allowing Roth time out after being cut. With Andersson looking for a fourth-round stoppage win, the protest was quickly dismissed.
