1937-09-23 Harry Jeffra w pts 15 Sixto Escobar, Polo Grounds, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA – NY/NBA. Referee: Frank Fullam. Having already beaten Escobar (117¼) on points twice previously in non-title bouts, Jeffra (116½) used his left hand to perfection, jabbing and moving at speed to win the points and make himself a difficult target. While Escobar made the mistake of continually looking for an opening to land a knockout punch rather than keeping busy, the challenger, who it was thought would be weakened by weight making, just kept going.
On winning the unanimous decision, a return clause contracted Jeffra to defend against Escobar within 90 days. Having won four non-title fights since becoming champion, Jeffra was beaten in another one by Panchito Villa (w pts 10 at The Bullring, Mexico City, Mexico on 1 January 1938), the latter coming from nowhere to take over The Ring magazine’s number-one spot. Although Villa remained in the top ten for some time he failed to capitalize on his win over Jeffra despite beating some good men and boxing on until 1949.
