1937-12-01 Gustave Roth drew 15 Karel Sys, Sports Palace, Brussels, Belgium - IBU. Referee: M. Falony. This was a contest in which a clash of styles meant that more often than not Roth (169¾) and his challenger cancelled each other out as both were too cautious when it came to making the first move. It was soon clear that Sys’ strategy was to draw Roth in, but with the latter apparently not happy to make the running there was little action. If he wanted to win the title it was really up to Sys (172½) to set the pace, and although occasionally letting the punches go Roth’s defence was too sound to break down. There were far too many clinches and too many warnings, with both men seemingly happy for things to continue the way they were. Finally, in the 12th, the fight livened up when Roth decided to throw more punches, but with Sys negating his aggression the bout fizzled out completely.
