1938-01-21 Gustave Roth w pts 15 Josef Besselmann, Sports Palace, Berlin, Germany - IBU. Referee: M. Murello. Defending the IBU version of the title for the sixth time, Roth (168½) took on Besselmann (155½), Germany’s leading middleweight, and after a hard contest came away with the unanimous decision. Although the heavy-handed Besselmann gave of his best he couldn’t move the crafty, skilful Roth, who was cautioned for holding in the 11th, but to his great credit he never gave up trying. Decked in the ninth, but up immediately, Besselmann continued to come forward right up to the final bell despite being outboxed by a very good champion. Meanwhile, in order to find Roth’s next opponent, Ad Heuser outpointed Karel Sys over 12 rounds at the Olympic Stadium, Berlin on 10 February.
