20 February Sixto Escobar w pts 15 Harry Jeffra, Escambron Beach Baseball Park, San Juan, Puerto Rico – NY/NBA. Referee: Johnny McAvoy. Learning from his mistakes of their previous fight and leaving nothing to chance, from the eighth round onwards Escobar (117¾) forced the fight to win the unanimous decision by a wide margin. Prior to then it had been an even contest, but once the challenger tasted victory following the effects of a terrific right-hand blow to Jeffra’s jaw in the eighth the end never looked far away. How Jeffra (117¾) made it to the final bell only he knew as he was dropped for three counts of nine, cut up around the right eye, and suffered a double dislocation of the jaw. Getting back into action, Escobar was beaten by Kayo Morgan, Nat Litfin, Henry Hook and Al Mancini in overweight contests. Suffering from a series of various ailments he was only completely fully fit to make a title defence early in 1939, Morgan being selected as the challenger.
