1938-06-17 Leo Rodak w pts 15 Jackie Wilson, Carlin’s Park, Baltimore, Maryland, USA - MARYLAND. Referee: Jack Dempsey. Scorecards: 76-74, 77-73, 75-75. In a fight given world title billing by the Maryland Boxing Commission, it was fairly even up until the end of the ninth round before Rodak (126) measured Wilson (124¾) with a solid shot to have him groggy at the bell. From thereon, though, Rodak took every round to run out a worthy winner by a unanimous decision, his body assaults draining the strength from Wilson, who was unable to find anything that counted.
Adding to his status, Rodak outscored Richie Fontaine over ten rounds at the Municipal Auditorium, New Orleans, Louisiana on 10 October 1938. Made at 126lbs, the NBA saw it as the semi-final leg of a competition to find a worthy opponent for the winner of the forthcoming NYSAC version of the world title between Joey Archibald and Mike Belloise. The comebacking Belloise had only lost once since returning to the ring, a ten-round points defeat at the hands of Archibald at the Griffith Stadium, Washington DC on 11 July, and having been promised first crack by the NYSAC at the earliest possible opportunity this fight was a natural.
