1938-06-22 Joe Louis w rtd 1 (15) Max Schmeling, Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NYC, New York, USA - WORLD. Referee: Arthur Donovan. Avenging the only defeat on his record, Louis (198¾) destroyed the ‘Black Uhlan’ in just over two minutes (2.04) of a contest made famous by the fact that whether he liked it or not Schmeling (193) was being used for Nazi propaganda purposes by Adolph Hitler. After a quiet start the champion began to let the punches go, soon staggering Schmeling with a left to the jaw before dropping him for ‘three’ with a right to the same spot. Up again, Schmeling was immediately floored after taking two lefts and a right to the chin. Somehow regaining his feet Schmeling was a sitting duck for Louis, and following a volley of rights and lefts to the head a terrific left hook-right cross put the challenger down for the third time. With Schmeling lying helpless and the referee starting the count it was all too much for the German corner, who threw the towel in so that they could tend to their man as quickly as possible. Stretchered out of the ring with fractures to the vertebrae, with Schmeling spending several months back in Germany recovering from the beating it was almost a year before a return to the ring was possible.
In a bid to find future opponents for Louis, the NYSAC matched Gunnar Barlund and Lou Nova in an eliminating contest at Madison Square Garden on 3 October. Winning by a seventh-round stoppage in what was a surprise result, Nova would eventually get a crack at Louis despite being stopped by Tony Galento in the 14th round of another eliminator at the Municipal Stadium, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 15 September 1939.
