1938-11-01 Solly Krieger w pts 15 Al Hostak, Civic Auditorium, Seattle, Washington, USA - NBA. Referee: Rod Murphy. Making his first defence, Hostak (159¾) was defeated in a stunning upset when unable to fathom out the peculiar jumpy style of Krieger (160). In what became a hard-hitting slugfest, Hostak complained that he had broken his right hand on Krieger’s head in the fourth round and badly damaged his left later on. Having made a good start, it was the fourth session that saw Hostak suddenly wilt and take a pounding from there on. Dropped in the 14th, by this time Hostak could barely see with both eyes almost closed, but he gamely made it to the final bell where the majority decision went against him. Hostak had been a massive betting favourite, with 17 consecutive inside-the-distance wins to his name, but in Krieger he met a durable battler of more than ten years in the ring who had never been floored.
