1939-09-25 [[Billy Conn]] w pts 15 [[Melio Bettina]], Forbes Field, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - USA. Referee: Red Robinson. As in their previous fight, Conn (172¼) was kept at bay for the opening six rounds as the clever Bettina (174½) continually confused him with his southpaw stance. Cut under the left eye, the champion began to pick things up in the seventh and ducking and countering well he began to outbox Bettina for the rest of the contest bar the 13th. In that session it was all Bettina, who took his man to the ropes, battering away with blows to head and body, and generally roughing Conn up. Although taken out of his stride, Conn came back well to shower Bettina with lefts and rights to maintain his lead on all three cards, but despite having the latter badly hurt a couple of times he was unable to floor him.
