1939-12-14 Tony Olivera w pts 10 Lou Salica, Civic Auditorium, San Francisco, California, USA - CALIFORNIA. Referee: Toby Irwin. In a nip and tuck affair with first one man taking the lead and then the other, Olivera (118), who concentrated on the body, was adjudged by the referee to have won on points despite Salica (117½) rocking him many times with solid rights to the head.
Afterwards, following a conversation with Salica’s manager, Nat Fleischer, writing in The Ring magazine, insisted that the official records of the Californian Boxing Commission showed Olivera to weigh 118¼lbs, while the San Francisco Chronicle reported that the local man took over a pound off to qualify for his title shot. The latter view was supported by Chief Inspector Shields of the Californian Boxing Commision, who stated that both men had made the required weight. Regardless of anything written here, Olivera was recognised in California as holding a version of the world title following this result, while Salica was still seen by New York as being their representative.
