1940-01-24 Henry Armstrong w rsc 9 (15) Pedro Montanez, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WORLD. Referee: Billy Cavanagh. In a contest that was sizzling with action right from the opening bell, the champion slammed in lefts and rights to head and body from start to finish as Montanez (144½) stood his ground before being worn down. Although Montanez had some success at the beginning, by the third he was taking a licking, but was still going toe to toe with Armstrong (139¾) despite being cut over the right eye. Even when dropped twice in the fourth, firstly for ‘five’ and then for ‘seven’, Montanez was still in there firing, while Armstrong was sending in trip-hammer punches from both hands remorselessly. In this fight the champion’s left hook was seen at its best, with Montanez having no answer to it at any stage, and in the eighth that punch along with several others put the latter down just as the bell rang. Allowed out for the ninth, Montanez could barely stand up and with Armstrong lashing in blows from all angles he was rescued by the referee after 47 seconds of the session.
In his next contest, Armstrong stepped up a division to have a crack at Ceferino Garcia’s Californian version of the world middleweight title, drawing over ten rounds at the Gilmore Stadium, Los Angeles on 1 March.
