1940-07-19 [[Tony Zale]] w rtd 13 (15) [[Al Hostak]], Civic Stadium, Seattle, Washington, USA - NBA. Referee: Benny Leonard. Having already been beaten by Zale (158) in an overweight match the previous January, Hostak (159¾) knew what he was up against but went out like a champion. Forcing matters all the way, Zale opened up a cut over Hostak’s left eye in the eighth before closing the other as he handed out a severe beating. Dropped in the 12th round and down for a count of ‘nine’ in the 13th, Hostak, his left hand badly injured, was in a helpless state when the referee stopped the contest on the 1.20 mark.

With Zale having some difficulty in finding an opponent for his first defence, Sam Pian, his manager, eventually settled on [[Steve Mamakos]], a man the champion had beaten on points in a January non-title bout. Despite losing, Mamakos had proved to be a teak-tough opponent who was sure to come forward when they met again, and although not a top-ten rated fighter he had recently beaten [[Sammy Luftspring]] (twice) and [[Milt Aron]].

1940-07-19 Tony Zale w rtd 13 (15) Al Hostak, Civic Stadium, Seattle, Washington, USA - NBA. Referee: Benny Leonard. Having already been beaten by Zale (158) in an overweight match the previous January, Hostak (159¾) knew what he was up against but went out like a champion. Forcing matters all the way, Zale opened up a cut over Hostak’s left eye in the eighth before closing the other eye as he handed out a severe beating. Dropped in the 12th round, and down for a count of ‘nine’ in the 13th, Hostak, his left hand badly injured, was in a helpless state when the referee stopped the contest on the 1.20 mark.

With Zale having some difficulty in finding an opponent for his first defence, Sam Pian, his manager, eventually settled on Steve Mamakos, a man the champion had beaten on points in a January non-title bout. Despite losing, Mamakos had proved to be a teak-tough opponent who was sure to come forward when they met again, and although not a top-ten rated fighter he had recently beaten Sammy Luftspring (twice) and Milt Aron.
