1940-10-14 Izzy Jannazzo w pts 15 Cocoa Kid, Carlin’s Park, Baltimore, Maryland, USA - MARYLAND. Referee: Jack Dempsey. Billed for the vacant world title as recognised in Maryland, the Cocoa Kid (147) made all the running from the opening bell, but was picked off by the fast-stepping Jannazzo (146½) who kept flicking out the left and showing a sturdy pair of legs when required. As much as the heavier-punching Kid tried, apart from the odd occasion, he could not get Jannazzo to stay in one place for too long despite constantly trying to get over right-hand smashes. When he did get home Jannazzo quickly recovered and was soon pumping his left into his rival’s face. In the 13th and 14th rounds, the Kid went after Jannazzo with lefts and rights to head and body, but each time he got home the latter was able to save himself. After coming back strongly in the 15th, at the end of the fight it was the referee’s casting vote that won it for Jannazzo.
Looking for a return match, in his very next fight the Kid (150) got himself knocked out inside three rounds by the 148lbs Jimmy Leto at the Century AC, Baltimore on 11 November, and it was the latter who eventually went forward to meet Jannazzo.
