1941-02-21 Tony Zale w co 14 (15) Steve Mamakos, The Stadium, Chicago, Illinois, USA - NBA. Referee: Tommy Gilmore. The hard-hitting champion took the opening four rounds before coming under attack in the fifth when Mamakos (157½) badly hurt him with a right to the jaw. The next two sessions saw Mamakos hit Zale (159) with everything he had, but having remained upright the latter came right back in the eighth. Both men were sounding each other out with solid rights to the head and by the tenth both had eye problems. Picking up the fight in the 12th, Zale was never headed from thereon and in the 13th he twice dropped the gallant Mamakos, left hooks and straight rights doing the damage. Saved by the bell, a glassy-eyed Mamakos was all at sea in the 14th and after being dropped by a straight right in his own corner he was counted out on the 26-second mark.
