1941-05-19 Petey Scalzo drew 15 Phil Zwick, The Auditorium, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - NBA. Referee: Barney Ross. Scorecard: 75-75. With both men looking to get the inside rail, this one turned out to be disappointing. While Scalzo (125) refused to take any risks, Zwick (124½) was at a loss on how to open the champion up and was unable to sustain any attacks. Although Zwick seemed to be in front at the halfway stage he began to lose ground as Scalzo picked it up, especially after opening up a cut over his rival’s left eye, before the challenger rallied in the closing three sessions. Making a superb effort in the 15th, Zwick had the crowd on their feet when knocking Scalzo through the ropes for a count of ‘three’, but he was unable to settle it as the latter covered up to make the final bell and have his hand raised by the referee. Then, having announced Scalzo as the winner, the result was later changed to that of a draw after it was discovered that the referee’s scorecard had been added up incorrectly and should have read 75 points each.
Scalzo’s next challenger would be Richie Lemos, a man he had knocked out in a non-title contest back in December 1940, but who had recently beaten Georgie Hansford (w pts 10 at the Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California on 29 April) to win the Californian State title.
