1941-07-01 Richie Lemos w co 5 (12) Petey Scalzo, Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA - NBA. Referee: Benny Whitman. While it was a quiet start and probably even coming into the fifth round, Lemos (125¼) switched to southpaw, his natural style, and immediately staggered Scalzo (126) with a corking left which was followed by a torrent of lefts and rights to the head. There was to be no respite, a solid left dropping the champion for a count of ‘nine’, and back up on his feet he was set about before another crackerjack of a punch sent him crashing to be counted out on the 2.02 mark. In mid October it was reported that Lemos was going to rest up a while due to suffering from brittle hands, but in the next breath it was announced that he would be defending the title against Jackie Wilson in mid November following two warm-up fights.
