1941-12-16 Jackie Wilson w pts 12 Richie Lemos, Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, Ca, USA - NBA. Referee: Abe Roth. Scorecards: 7-3, 9-3, 6-6. As The Ring magazine aptly put it this one was a facsimile of their first meeting, the only thing being different was the referee. Again, Wilson (126) was the master of Lemos (126) who was unable to get to close quarters and always seemed to be on the end of the champion’s left hand, despite charging his foe down. Strangely, both men had difficulty making the weight and while Lemos claimed that it had weakened him it obviously had not affected the slippery Wilson, who had his had raised automatically at the final bell.
In his next two outings, at catchweights, Wilson took on Abe Denner (l pts 10 on 20 February 1942 at the Mechanics’ Building, Boston, Massachusetts) and Terry Young (l pts 8 on 2 March 1942 at the St Nicholas Arena, Manhattan, NYC, New York), following which he was out of action for the rest of the year, having fractured his left arm in the third round of the latter contest and showing great courage to make it to the final bell.
Following this, Pedro Hernandez was pushed up to top spot in The Ring magazine ratings on the back of wins over Sal Bartolo and Tommy Forte (twice), but he quickly dropped down the order after losing to Billy Banks. Hernandez came back well to be ranked number one again when outscoring Lulu Costantino on 29 June, but the latter took immediate revenge and that defeat was followed by defeats at the hands of Willie Pep, Bill Speary and Bartolo in three of his next four contests.
