1943-08-16 Phil Terranova w co 8 (15) Jackie Callura, Pelican Stadium, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA - NBA. Referee: Red Dolan. Earlier, in June, Terranova had mixed fortunes, suffering a fifth-round kayo defeat at the hands of Chalky Wright and then knocking out the NBA champion, Callura, inside three rounds. Terranova’s reward for beating Callura was a return over 15 rounds with the title involved. Looking to put that defeat far behind him the champion rushed out at the opening bell, only to be met with well-timed punches to head and body that shook him up. That was a portent of things to come and following much of the same, Terranova (124) measured Callura (124¼) up with a thundering right cross in the eighth and the latter hit the deck for a count of ‘nine’. On his feet again but badly dazed, Callura was put down from another smashing right to the jaw, this time to be counted out with just 15 seconds of the session remaining.
