1944-05-05 [[Sal Bartolo]] w pts 15 [[Phil Terranova]], The Garden, Boston, Massachusetts, USA - NBA. Referee: Johnny Rawson. Making his first defence against the man he won the title from Bartolo (126) used his left well and moved away as best he could, but Terranova (125½) pushed him all the way to a split decision verdict. It was certainly tough, with the mauling, brawling Terranova, cut on the right eye in the fourth, concentrating on the body and never giving the champion a moment’s respite. It was Bartolo’s class that just about gave him the edge.
