1946-04-30 Ike Williams w rsc 8 (15) Enrique Bolanos, Wrigley Field, Los Angeles, California, USA - NBA. Referee: Benny Whitman. After taking the first couple of rounds by dint of a good left-hand lead, the challenger was assailed by Williams (134½) in the third and saved by the bell when blasted to the canvas by a terrific left hook. Dropped from a right to the body in the fourth, Bolanos (133½) was never in the fight from there on and was put down again, this time for ‘nine’, in the fifth. Showing immense bravery he struggled into the eighth before being rescued by the referee at 2.22 of the session, having taken another count of ‘nine’ and being in no fit state to defend himself.
A pro since the age of 16 and a veteran of 132 fights, the tenth-rated Ronnie James would be Williams’ next challenger after the promoter, Jack Solomons, made the American an offer he could not refuse. Having won the British title when knocking out Eric Boon inside ten rounds on 12 August 1944, James had beaten top British fighters such as Len Beynon, Cuthbert Taylor, Johnny McGrory, Dick Corbett, Dave Finn and Dave Crowley. Recognised as a smart box-fighter and a stiff puncher, he had also defeated Jackie Wilson, who would go on to win the NBA featherweight title.
